ATTLEBORO, Mass., Nov. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Sensata Technologies (NYSE: ST) is proud to announce that it received the University of Rhode Island 2012 President's Corporate Award and that Sensata Chief Executive Officer Tom Wroe was recognized as one of four distinguished URI alumni at the University's 2012 Distinguished Achievement Awards program event held on October 27 in Newport, RI.

In presenting the awards, URI President David M. Dooley recognized Sensata's success as a world leader and early innovator in mission-critical sensors and controls and its work in support of the URI International Engineering Program (IEP).

Sensata and its predecessor, the Sensors & Controls business of Texas Instruments, have provided support for the IEP program for more than a decade. Company support has included student internship experiences and board-level assistance to highlight the importance of cross-cultural engineering education to business and educational organizations nationwide.

Sensata Senior Vice President of Human Resources Donna Kimmel has served on the IEP Board of Directors for seven years and has taken an active role in promoting the program at a 2008 IEP Colloquium and through the Language Flagship, a federal initiative of the National Security Education Office launched in collaboration with U.S. universities in March 2010. Rhode Island is one of six states to have developed a road-map for learning foreign languages, thanks in part to support provided by URI and its IEP program.

Wroe, who graduated in 1972 and received an honorary degree in 2006, was honored for the work he has done preparing engineers for the global workforce and especially his support of the URI IEP.

Wroe started his career at Sensors & Controls in 1972 as a manufacturing engineer. During his long tenure with the business, Tom has held management assignments in operations, engineering, marketing and business development. He currently serves on the boards of the Associated Industries of Massachusetts, Cape Cod Healthcare, Chase Corp., and Boston College's Carroll School of Management.

The other URI President's awards honorees included Cornelius M. Kerwin, M.A. '73, Ph.D., President, American University; Ernest Mario, M.S. '63, Ph.D. '66, Hon '91, Chairman and CEO, Capnia; and Blanche R. Murray '41, Hon. '88, Retired Educator, Tolman High School and the first female president of both the URI Foundation and the URI Alumni Association.
