Sensata ranked fifth on the list with MEMS-related revenues of $190 million.

According to IHS, overall 2011 revenue for automotive MEMS sensors amounted to $2.24 billion, up 14 percent from $1.96 billion in 2010. Sensata's yearly growth rate was 24 percent, the second highest of the Top 10 group.  As a group, the Top 10 account for 91 percent of this growing market.

"The market for automotive MEMS sensors and actuators is growing at a rate of 7.7 percent from 2011 to 2016, driven largely by the mandates on safety like electronic stability control and tire pressure monitoring in major automotive markets worldwide," said Richard Dixon, principal analyst, MEMS & sensors at IHS. "As a result, Sensata and other companies serving these markets have been largely growing at above average rates."

Sensata concentrates MEMS production on pressure and force sensors, and is No. 1 in high-pressure applications like brake, common fuel rail and cylinder pressure sensing, using its silicon piezoresistive sensors.  Sensata is also a leader in applying low pressure, bulk micromachined piezoresistive MEMS into challenging exhaust gas applications used for emissions control.

According to Sensata Business Development Director Karl Abrahamson, factors driving growth in this area include governmental safety, fuel efficiency and emission regulations in both emerging and mature markets.
